Dori is an experienced freelance personal finance journalist who has reported cover stories and special sections (Newsweek), and written news (The New York Times, the New York Post), and features ( the New York Daily News, The Washington Post, TheStreet.com) for major media outlets. She got to know the beat when she reported from 1998 to 2001 for Jane Bryant Quinn’s twice-weekly, nationally syndicated Washington Post and Good Housekeeping columns and also contributed to her Newsweek column. Previously, Dori reported on the newspaper industry for Editor & Publisher and MediaWeek. She began her career reporting local news and writing award-winning features for the Daily Record in Morristown, NJ.
Dori is also a versatile and experienced editor. She has designed pages and supervised production through final pages (the Daily Record, Morristown, NJ); assigned and edited a staff of national correspondents (The National Courier, Plainfield, NJ); and served as the managing editor of a successful women’s niche magazine (Today’s Christian Woman).
At Covenant House, she oversaw the installation of a state-of-the-art Apple MacIntosh system (1985) that increased the frequency of publications and also saved 25 percent on printing costs. She produced that year’s annual report by working with photographers, and interviewing street kids, in several cities around the country.
Most recently, she edited real-time news summaries for a market-moving publisher of financial information (TheFlyonTheWall.com, Summit, NJ, May-October 2006). She also served as Interim Deputy News Editor of a regional business weekly newspaper (NJ Biz, New Brunswick, NJ, June-August 2007), where she had the opportunity to use two of her favorite skills: coaching young writers and producing daily pages.
Dori also recently “repurposed” content for a new personal finance library for Bloomberg.com, based on Making the Most of Your Money NOW (Jane Bryant Quinn, Simon & Schuster, January, 2010).
To read more Newsweek stories, check out “A Buck Here, A Buck There,” and “Talking ‘Bout My Generation” published in the special section, Make Your Money Grow Finance Guide (March 24, 2003). Read “Drowning in a Sea of Debt” (Feb. 5, 2001) for an example of Dori’s skill at finding consumer stories. “Oh, No, More Pension Blues,” by Jane Bryant Quinn (Jan. 20, 2003) provides a good example of Dori's detailed reporting on personal finance and investing.
